Sil Brook Writer/Producer

About

“A renowned research producer of documentaries  for over 20 years.  From ‘Mystery of the Bible’, ‘Weapons that Made Britain’ to ‘Pompeii: The Mystery of the People Frozen in Time’.

That lead Sil to start her own company, Tierra Productions LLC.

During research for someone, she found Lady Constance Lytton and her sister Lady Emily Lytton.   Lady Constance inspired Sil to write “Winds” as a docudrama.  Sil wanted to bring Lady Constance to the limelight.  She had been ignored all these years, always talking about the Pankhurst.  But the Pankhurst were not alone in the fight and they didn’t have to give up as much as Lady Constance did.

Early in life Lady Constance was quiet, shy and physically weak.   She would prefer to leave political matters to the men.   Her aristocratic title meant that the authorities treated her kindly, after all she was the daughter of a Viceroy and the Earl of Lytton.   Her brother was a member of the House of Lords.

Her sister Lady Emily introduced Lady Constance to the suffragettes and she became an influential British suffragette activist, writer, speaker and campaigner for Votes for Women.

Sil found all the letters written by the women of the WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union).  The militant face of the women right to vote movement which meant ‘By any means ‘.  Their motto was ‘Deeds not Words ‘

She was subsequently imprisoned four times including once under the alias Jane Warton, where she was forced fed seven times while on hunger strike.   She chose the alias, Jane Warton, to avoid receiving special treatment and privileges because of her family title.

While imprisoned at Holloway Prison during March 1909, Lady Constance used a piece of broken hairpin to cut the letter ‘V’ into the flesh of her breast, placed over her heart.  The ‘V’ came from ‘Votes for Women’.

Her heart attack, stroke and early death at 54 have been attributed in part to the trauma of hunger-strikes and force feeding by the prison authorities.

Her story must be told.

Sil Brook: ‘Winds’ was written by veteran Sil Brook. Sil’s work was a fixture with documentaries for over 20 years.
